If you are desperate to lose your fat tummy, then it really helps if you understand the causes of the problem in the first place.
The majority of people still believe that a fat tummy is simply the result of a lack of exercise and a bad diet. Although these are the cmost common causes of the rpoblem, there are many other contributing factors which need to be taken into account.I will now discuss the most common ones and what you can do to fight them.
Cause 1: A Slow Metabolism
Its a well known fact that people have different metabolic rates, and as we get older our metabolism tends to slow down. What this means is that we simply can't burn calories at the same rate as when we were younger.A slower metabolic rate also means more fat storage, and the tummy area is one of the first to show signs of this.
Cause 2: The Menopause
The good news about this one is that it only affects 50% of us! Well, thats good news if you are in the other 50% of course. With the onset of the menopause, many women find that fat tends to build up around the middle as well as a whole range of other non-too-pleasant changes.
Cause 3: Stress
Stress is actually one of the major contributing factors in weight gain.A fat tummy, is of course, just one of the many detrimental effects on your health that stress can bring.
What you may not know is that there's a physical reason for this, and its all down to a hormone called cortisol, that is released by the body during times of stress.Cortisol causes your liver to create more sugar and you start to feel hungrier as a result leading you to eat more.Unfortunately, your tummy is where most of these additional calories end up first.
Cause 4: Genetics
Sadly, genetics also plays a role, and this is much harder to control, as you can imagine.
We can actually classify our body shape as pear or apple depending on our genetic makeup.
Pear shaped people are those of us who tend to put on weight around the lower half of their body. Apple shapes are characterised by weight gain around the top half.
Check out what kind you are by looking at your relatives who are overweight.
If they are apple shaped then it may be the case that you will find a fat tummy comes naturally to you no matter what you do.
Cause 5: Poor Digestion
This can also be caused by stress, see what I had to say about that above.
Gastrointestinal problems can often leave you feeling bloated and gassy and, in fact, many people who complain about having a fat tummy are in fact suffering from poor digestion, not just excess weight.
Cause 6: Poor Posture
Most people dont even consider this one.Poor posture can make your tummy look "pot bellied" in appearance. To measure what effect your posture is having check out the difference in the mirror between your normal standing pose, compared to when you raise yourself up in an erect stance. Now poor posture is unlikely to be the cause of a
fat tummy on its own - chances are there is also excess fat there, but the poor posture can accentuate the appearance of the belly fat.
Cause 7: Eating Late at Night
Its never a good idea to eat late at night, especially if you are trying to lose belly fat.Your food wont have the chance to digest properly and you wont sleep as well either.
You greatly increase the chances of gaining weight around the middle by doing this.If you have to eat at night, then make it a light snack, preferably some nuts, or fruit.
What Does This Mean For Me?
As I said at the beginnning, diet and exercise are the two most likely things that are causing your
fat tummy, so you really need to take them into account. Any diet and exercise regime that you try and undertake to tackle your fat tummy will also need to take these other contributing factors into account, if it is to ultimately be successful.
